The content on this site needs some breathing room, for sure. Everything seems a bit crammed.
I also had a hard time figuring out its organization. Even the breadcrumbs didn't help me very much.
Aesthetically speaking, it's not bad...although I'm not sure that the horizontal dividers between certain elements should stretch across the entire screen.
I don't know why but it seems kind of info-mercialish. I know that is not a word that should have an "ish" on it. Although some of the writing had me going further than the front page.
The transition on the rotating banner is a little jarring and distracting, but maybe that was the intent. It got me to look over when it changed, but it also pull me from whatever else I was trying to do on the site.
Some more space would really help this page stand out.
Agree with all comments above. I also found the clickable pictures in the header a little strange. Unless I sat my mouse over them for a few seconds to read the alt tag, I'd have no way of knowing what they were for or where they went.
How does a picture of 2 lovebirds kayaking with proper safety gear relate to Continuing Education?
Thanks "msteciuk" -- We will look at what we can do about the top banner pictures.. and what we can do on the breadcrumbs.. what was the issue with them? Also.. space, is it too crowded on the front page only... or all interior pages?
@stewart .. the front flash scroller does seem to have an issue in IE, why? who knows.. it is controlled by ActionScript.. not JS or any web parts. In other browsers the image should sit for about 5 seconds before changing.
@TAdams.. Thanks. I do agree with the top pictures, that they "kinda just sit there". Don't know if would just be best to get rid of them. And we have Kayaking in our Continuing Education program.
@ALL -- Thanks. I know our front page seems to be cluttered. We battle the issue of those who want our site like Google (just a logo and a search).. to every department wanting their link on the front page. I wonder if we did get rid of the top photos.. we could put some space between the news and calendar items and scroller. At least try to put more space between everything.
@wfrankhouser - the internal pages do have a bit more breathing room, so I guess I'm mostly referring to the home page.
You're not only trying to fit within an 800x600 window, you're also "sucking it in" to fit everything above the fold. People may be of different minds on this subject, but I'm not sure the whole "above the fold" principle still applies. If you have a home page that offers a good cross section of your site's content, and successfully highlights most important, oft used resources, a little bit of scrolling isn't going to bother anyone... except maybe those die-hard anti-scrolling activists. :)
I realize that, what may seem like a pretty straightforward suggestion may in actuality be quite involved... akin to a complete redesign (at least of the home page). If you want to start small, I'd tackle that tacky graphic of the LCD monitor on your home page ;)
@msteciuk -- you kind of read our designers mind.. we did intend to keep the site accessible and available at 800x600, which also means "above the fold" as we used in the pre-stages. Yes.. the market has a new standard of 1024x768.. at least! But we want to make sure for those who still are one standard behind still get it. We would love to use CSS min-width and max-width for this... but not all browsers are compatible.
For our "campaigns", we usually have 3 areas that change on the front page. 1) Top photos once a quarter to highlight a program at the college (even though.. yes.. no one would know to click on them. 2) The main flash scroller (which does need work.. and making accessible when no flash installed) and 3) that "feature box". this changes whenever their is a certain highlight on the site or something big. So the "TV" wont be there for a long period, we usually have a photo of a student or faculty that we highlight.
@wfrankhouser--This explains thing a lot more about the site we have been trying to get this type of detail with our submissions but have had a hard time getting the submitter a way to do that doesn't take a lot of time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@atfoss - thanks. I will see if I can post a message around to our community college system.. and see if the web team can post their site.. and provide feedback.

@atfoss I can definitely see your point - "BECAUSE YOU want to get started today!" has a similar feel to "but wait, there's more!"
I knew I should have acted now!
