Wow you can say that again. I also really dislike the vertical scrolling links at the top, and the fact that even clicking on 4 of the main sections, I was still not presented with any content, I was just taken to another page looking just like the home page to click links on. It almost seemed more like a game to me than an actual useful website.
How unfortunate! Not only is this terribly unoriginal, they stopped short of reproducing Brown's functionality, without which this whole layout/design becomes practically unusable...

Apparently it originally had the JavaScript mouseovers, but they removed them and added the planet after getting a "cease and desist" letter from Brown. The tragedy is from the sounds of it, none of the staff or students like the design. It lives on because some dean or directer somewhere fell in love with it.
When they launched this homepage, it reproduced Brown's animation exactly. The code was a straight copy of Brown's code. In fact, we found out about it when their hit counts started showing up in our Google Analytics stats. That's right, they had copied our Google Analytics code, including the account number.

@cvfoss: Brown never sent any cease and desist. Brown's position is: we are flattered they like our site so much.
