Wow, I'm a little taken back by this. The University of Chicago main site is one of my all time favorites, but this is just not working for me.
It's definitely different and I respect the thinking outside the box, but for me it just doesn't work. The bold colors through out the page just cause confusion for my eyes, I'm not sure where to look. There also seems to be a lot of content trying to be fit into too small of an area.
Great direction, I just think it could be polished more.
I designed both this and the main uchicago site, so I can't very well take offense at your feedback. :)
That said--we were definitely going for something that was bolder and more energetic than the homepage, as we think is appropriate for a target audience of 18 year olds. I can appreciate that the bright colors can be polarizing, and think the decision to launch with Mr Rainbow Kite on the homepage was the wrong one; it gilded the "colorful site" lily by a good measure. We've since implemented a random feature rotation, and I think some of the other big photos work more successfully.

There are elements that are really cool in this site ei: the highlighter style background, loose sketchy feel, and the color scheme.
The white space is nice but im not sure what it is about that "Information for:" area. Too little white space around it? These info/secondary navigation are get lost in the mix with the content.
The main branding/image area is neat. The carry over of the "Apply Online" and "Request Info" in a blank square space seems like a desperate more to call attention and is actually ruining the whole experience and flow of the awesome photography. I'd like to see more of that light gray band, maybe applying that as a background either behind the "Information for" or behind the branding/image to elevate a point of interest/focus.

Well said Krrraft, as I'm sure you know, you're never going to please everyone! But mucho props on the main site, very nice job on that one.

Agreed, it's youthful without being in your face. I like it.

I enjoy this site. It's "young" without being cliche. The information seems well-organized and not overwhelming.
