Rich colors, nice graphic, but clunky font. Having a home navigation on the index page is not necessary. When I clicked on the navigation the page that loads has a shadow effect that seems natural on the header graphic but is not carried down the remaining page.

Once again a great look for a start but they didn't stick the landing...If you know what I mean.

@atfoss - which font is clunky? The nav font? I agree that it is a bit clunky. I wonder why it's in all caps? I bet it would look better if they had only capped the first letter.

It is nice, but in someway I don't see the general Vassar College Branding, so I do not associate this department with the University at all.

The design is clean and simple, giving breathing room to the content, which I really appreciate :)

@ericstoller - The nav font seems clunky. I thought that it was interesting that they would have spent the time picking photos that seem to have a historical meaning to the college and the cut off the top and side of it, and then set aside an area for the snail mail address at the bottom. Don't quite get it...

@atfoss good point. it could use a bit of tweaking to make it really spectacular. I just realized that I'm a huge fan of brown. It's so underused!

ps: It would be cool if there was a new comments notification so that we would know if someone did a twitter-like "@" response...

Lovely design, but I have to agree that the typography is a bit clunky. It needs some refinement. The header "History Department", for example, is almost left justified while the rest of the text/nav is centered. It seems awkward. Either left justify or make it way more un-aligned. Otherwise, it looks like a mistake.

The biggest problem I have is that the entire site doesn't have any Vassar college branding. It's not clear that it's a department of a larger university. To me, this is #1 and should be on every page.

Nice deisgn. Love the use of the pictures and colors. I agree with all regarding the font and typography. An index on the courses page would have been a given in my opion. The way it is you have to scroll through all to find the course you are searching for.

Good:
Clean Design
consistent fonts
nice color palette

Bad:
Seems very disconnected for primary site
lacks search feature
needs larger images on sub pages

Graphically I like it. Navigationally, not so much. And I don't like the idea of a "splash" type of page. DOn't get me wrong... it looks great. It's just not as practical as it could be.

Thumbs up for the general design. I'm not sure about the cover page. Perhaps I'm old fashioned. I want content. Right away.

One other thing: where's the Vassar logo? I forgot it was Vassar after the first page. While there's the script name, it blends in and doesn't do much in the way of branding for the university or connecting the dept to some greater entity.

@glp12-good point, I never noticed the lack of logo.
