Big Things in Store …

Posted December 8th, 2008 by Stewart Foss

You may have noticed that things have been a little quiet from the admins here at eduStyle for a bit. Don’t worry, we’re still working hard to improve the site and get all your sites published to the gallery (yeah, we’re a little behind). As you may know, we’re also working on getting a few guest blog posts up (coming very soon, we promise). And we’re getting ready for the 2nd Annual eduStyle Awards.

One thing you may not know about that we are really excited about (and we hope you will be too) is we’ll be putting out the first in a series of books for the higher-ed web design market. Yes, you heard that right, we’re working on a series of books. The first will breakdown the designs of over 20 University and College homepages and offer some solid tips and tricks that you can use to improve your school’s site. It should be out sometime early in the new year. So if you are interested in being the first to know (and getting a little discount on the price), sign-up with your email to be notified when the first book comes out.

Sounds great! Although I’m a student, not an admin, higher ed web design very much interests me. I’m especially interested in how universities are using social web applications to encourage student participation (and to show outsiders that the cool stuff going on). I’m working with some other students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to build a web application designed to expose all the interesting curricular and extra-curricular projects going on at the College of Computing and Informatics and allow students to talk about them.

The students I work with and myself (an Academic Advisor) are also very interested in how universities are using social web applications to encourage student participation. Although currently not a focus of this website (as this site is about good design in general), I am hopeful they will consider expanding the focus of this site and recognition for those of us out there who are. I have actually taken the initiative at my university this year to teach and promote various social web applications and how they can be used to communicate and connect with current and prospective students. I think its great students at your university are also getting involved in developing web applications for students!

Thanks, Elizabeth. I too think there is a lot of unused potential in social web apps for universities.

I’ll submit the site to EduStyle once its online but in the mean time, here are a few snapshots of the interface:
