I have trouble getting anyone to accept much less acknowledge the value in social media. Digg is a tricky one to take advantage of for higher education. I could see how with a larger institution than I work at tragedy or controversy could become hot Digg news. As far as research I think your right, something quirky or real interesting could go hot.
